2008 Essay Writing Contest

  • Contest Location: AIM4A Tutoring Centers
  • Contest Date: June 23 - June 26, 2008
  • Contest Time: During Center Timings
  • Two levels:
    • Level 1: Grades 1-5
    • Level 2: Grade 6 and higher
  • Three trophies for each level -- for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners.
  • Participation medals for all.
  • All awards will be given at the Award Ceremony on July 27, 2008.
  • Registration fee: $9.95 for AIM4A Students & $19.95 for others.

2008 Public Speaking Contest

  • Contest Date: Sunday, July 27, 2008
  • Contest Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • Contest Location: Novi Civic Center, 45175 W 10 Mile Rd, Novi, MI 48375
  • Two levels:
    • Level 1: Grades 1-5 (speech time of 2 minutes)
    • Level 2: Grade 6 and higher (speech time of 3 minutes)
  • Three trophies for each level -- for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners.
  • Participation medals for all.
  • All awards will be given at the Award Ceremony on July 27, 2008.
  • Registration fee: $9.95 for AIM4A Students & $19.95 for others.
  • Please register by June 6, 2008.
  • The actual speech topics will be given to the contestants one week before the contest.

MOEMS - Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools (Results)

  • Contest Date: November 2007 - March 2008,
    Five Olympiads are held one month apart starting in November.

  • Contest Format: 5 tests with 5 questions each

  • Levels: E-Level is for Grades 4-6 or lower; M-Level is for Grades 7-8
  • Eligibility: Any elementary/middle school student whose school does not participate in MOEMS (get permission letter).
  • Certificates for all students and awards for about 50% of all participating students

2008 Math Contests
AMC8 - American Math Competition for Middle Schools (Results)

  • Contest Date: November 14 Wednesday
  • Contest Time: 7 PM
  • Contest Location: Aim4A Tutoring Centers
  • Contest Format: 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice
  • Grades: 5,6,7, and 8
  • Eligibility: Any student who is officially enrolled in Junior High School grade 8, or below, and is taking at least one course; and Home School students (14 or under). Student must get a permission letter from school.
  • Grading: One point is given for each correct answer and no penalty for incorrect answers.
  • Materials Covered: Subject matter normally associated with the seventh and eighth grade mathematics curriculum including (but not limited to) such topics as the arithmetic of integers, fractions and decimals, percent and proportion, number theory, informal geometry, perimeter, area, volume, probability and statistics, and logical reasoning.
  • Purpose: To increase interest in mathematics and to develop problem solving ability through a friendly competition. The questions range in difficulty from easy to very difficult in order to appeal to a broad range of students.

2008 Math Contests
Mandelbrot for High School Students (Results)

  • Contest Date: October 2007 - March 2008
  • Test 1: Oct 17th Wednesday
  • Contest Time: 7 PM (40 minutes each test)
  • Contest Location: Aim4A Tutoring Centers
  • Format: Five rounds of seven short-answer questions valued by difficulty at one, two, or three points.
  • Topics: Algebra, geometry, exponents, probability, and a few others such as number theory or classical inequalities.
  • Levels: National level for more advanced students and the regional level for less experienced problem solvers.
  • Eligibility: Middle/high school student whose school does not participate in Mandelbrot (get a permission letter from math teacher).

2007 Math Contests
GAUSS - Canadian Mathematics Competition (Results)

  • Contest Date: Saturday May 19, 2007
  • Contest Time: 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
  • Contest Location: Aim-for-A Tutoring Center in Canton
  • Contest Format: 25 multiple choice questions to be done in 60 minutes, calculators are permitted.
  • Contest Scoring: Each correct answer is worth 5 in Part A, 6 in Part B, and 8 in Part C. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer. Each unanswered question is worth 2, to a maximum of 10 unanswered questions.
  • Primarily for Grades 7 & 8, but lower grade students are also encouraged to participate
  • Top 25% scorers will be awarded Certificates of Distinction
  • All others will receive Certificates of Participation
  • All awards will be given at the Award Ceremony on June 9, 2007.
  • Please register by May 12, 2007.
